12 Indoor Air Quality Tips for Torrance Homes
Clean ducts are the foundation, but indoor air quality is a system. Here are the highest-impact things you can do.
1. Upgrade your filter
Move from a basic MERV-4 fiberglass filter to a MERV-8 or MERV-11 pleated filter (if your system supports it). The difference in particulate capture is enormous.
2. Change filters on schedule
Every 60–90 days for 1-inch filters. Every 6–12 months for media filters. Mark your calendar.
3. Run the system fan in 'On' mode periodically
Set the fan to On for an hour each day so the filter has a chance to clean the air without waiting for heating or cooling demand.
4. Add standalone HEPA air purifiers
One quality HEPA purifier per main living area can dramatically reduce particulate.
5. Vacuum with a HEPA-equipped vacuum
Standard vacuums redistribute fine dust. HEPA-equipped models trap it.
6. Manage humidity
Aim for 30–50% indoor humidity. Too low irritates respiratory systems; too high feeds mold and dust mites.
7. Don't smoke indoors
Smoke residue penetrates ductwork and is nearly impossible to fully remove without major intervention.
8. Address pet allergens at the source
Bathe pets regularly; brush outdoors; consider a dedicated pet bed area that you can clean thoroughly.
9. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days
Coastal Torrance is mild, but spring brings significant pollen from inland sources.
10. Address chemical sources
Store paint, cleaners and gasoline outside the home. Switch to low-VOC paints and cleaners.
11. Service HVAC annually
A tuned-up system runs cleaner. Coil cleaning and drain pan maintenance prevent biological growth.
12. Get a baseline air quality test
Knowing where you start helps you measure progress. AirCare Solutions provides free baseline testing as part of any inspection.
