10 Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning (Torrance Homeowner's Guide)
Your HVAC system circulates the air you breathe thousands of times a year. When the ducts that carry that air are clean, you don't think about them. When they aren't, the signs show up across your whole home — and most of them are surprisingly easy to miss.
1. Visible dust around the registers
Streaks of black or gray dust on the ceiling or wall around supply vents are a textbook sign. That's contamination being launched out of the ducts every time the blower kicks on, and depositing on the nearest surface.
2. Persistent musty odor when the AC starts
A musty smell the first 30 seconds the air conditioning runs almost always means biological growth somewhere in the system — usually at the coil or in the plenum.
3. Allergies and asthma flare-ups indoors
If symptoms worsen at home and improve when you leave, the air inside your home is part of the problem. Filters help, but they only catch what reaches them. Contamination already inside the ducts will keep circulating regardless.
4. Uneven heating or cooling
When one room is always warmer or cooler than the rest, partial restriction in the ductwork is the most common cause. A thorough cleaning often resolves what feels like an equipment problem.
5. Higher than expected utility bills
A restricted system runs longer to reach set temperature. The Department of Energy estimates 25–40% of HVAC energy is wasted on a dirty system.
6. Recent renovation or construction
Drywall dust, sawdust and joint compound get pulled into returns and deposited throughout the system. Every remodeled home should have a duct cleaning when the work is finished.
7. Visible mold at or near a register
Black or greenish growth anywhere near a vent is a major red flag. Mold in ducts gets aerosolized every cycle.
8. Signs of rodents or insects
Droppings, nest material or chewed insulation in or near the ducts means contamination is being distributed everywhere the air goes.
9. The system hasn't been cleaned in 5+ years
NADCA recommends a professional cleaning every 3–5 years. If you can't remember when yours was last done, it's time.
10. You bought the home recently
Unless the previous owner documented a recent cleaning, you don't know what's in there. A baseline cleaning when you move in is one of the highest-value services you can book.
